March is Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month
  • What are developmental disabilities?
  • What are signs of developmental disabilities?
  • How can I support children in my care with developmental disabilities?
  • What must I do legally when including those with developmental disabilities in my program?
  • How do I bring my concerns to the attention of parents?
  • How do I help those with developmental disabilities transition to the next setting?

As a child care provider you may have all of these questions and more when it comes to providing the best possible care for children with developmental disabilities.

In 1987, President Ronald Reagan declared the month of March Developmental Disabilities Awareness month. This month is a time to raise awareness about the needs and challenges that individuals with developmental disabilities face each day, as well as an opportunity to encourage everyone to provide support and encouragement to help those with developmental disabilities reach their full potential.

Child care providers often play a key role in the lives of children with developmental disabilities, as you may be among the first to notice a child’s difficulties or special needs. These children need providers who understand their unique needs and abilities, provide appropriate support when needed, plan for activities that promote social skill development, and create accepting environments.

Center for Childcare Careers offers courses that can provide the answers to many of the questions you may have, as well as the necessary knowledge and skills in order to create meaningful and tailored plans to help every child achieve. Check out the following courses for more information.
